Hello! My name is Graham and this is my green energy blog. I was inspired to start this blog when my 8-year-old son returned home from school with his science homework. The homework consisted of information and questions relating to climate change. I was shocked to discover the impact humankind was having on the planet so I decided to take action. I contacted a green energy company and asked them to conduct an assessment on my home. I then installed double-glazed windows and solar panels on my home. These measures mean I do not need to rely on carbon generated power.

Having asbestos-containing materials in your home poses a hazard to you and your family. You may hire a professional to remove the materials or opt for DIY removal, which is not advisable. Asbestos-containing materials will require proper disposal as asbestos is harmful to the environment. A few tips for asbestos removal include the following:
1. Contact a recycling centre
It is possible to dispose of asbestos in a recycling centre near you. Always check if the recycling centre is licensed and authorised to receive and dispose of the asbestos. These centres charge a disposal fee depending on the amount of asbestos materials you have. Note that the recycling centres cannot give you an estimate before they weigh the asbestos material. You should also enquire whether the facility disposes of residential or commercial asbestos materials -- some facilities are only licensed to dispose of either residential or business asbestos waste.
2. Wrapping techniques
Before transporting asbestos to a disposal facility, you need to take measures to prevent disturbance of the particles. Asbestos materials need to be wrapped in heavy-duty plastic. Always dampen the asbestos waste with pump spray before wrapping it in plastic. Note that heavy-duty plastic does not include carrier bags or garbage bags -- this type of plastic is labelled explicitly for asbestos use. After acquiring heavy-duty plastic, ensure the materials are wrapped in such a way that there are no protruding pieces. Do not forget to tape the plastic to ensure the asbestos is adequately sealed. Lastly, the plastic should be labelled to serve as a warning from opening or tearing the bag.
3. Transport vehicle
You must select the right kind of car to transport the sealed asbestos. The car should be covered and leak-free. You should not use an open truck or a car that is not sealed correctly. With open vehicles, there is a possibility of damage to the plastic wrapping, which increases the likelihood of dispersal of asbestos fibres. If you lack access to a proper vehicle, you can opt to hire a skid company that is willing to transport asbestos.
4. Rubbish removal
As you dispose of asbestos materials, you must know that a standard rubbish removal service will not accept these materials. Note that some local city councils offer a pickup service at a cheaper cost in comparison to private collectors. With city council collections, however, collection time may vary, and they may have a limit on the weight.
